Canberrans: Harder to be a Socceroo than a Wallaby

We've got many more Wallabies from Canberra than Socceroos. Our Private Schools just produce better Rugby players.

Well what a crock. This came from a Canberra Sports Journalist I met recently.

First of all the Private Schools in Canberra.....
have a long proud history of producing Rugby players but ask Marist, Radford, Grammar, St Eddies and co and they'd all talk about the huge switch to football in recent years. And it will continue won't it?

Secondly until recently there were just THREE teams in Union. Brumbies, Waratahs and Queensland.

It makes sense, to me, that the Wallabies will be chosen from those three teams. Therefore any Canberran making the Brumbies has a great chance of making the Wallabies.

There just aren't that many Union players to choose from.

As for football. The code is played across the whole country, and indeed Aussies play across the world, and therefore to make the national team from any city is a tad harder. Particularly one that doesn't have a professional team.

So I would argue the fact that so many of our players have reached Socceroos and Australian Representative Level is a credit to our development processes.

When two Tuggeranong United Under 11's rise to Socceroos level it is a huge achievement.

When four Canberrans make the current Australian Under 17 team and a further four have made the Under 18 and Under 20 teams then clearly Canberra is doing something right.

It's much harder to make the Socceroos than the Wallabies; but just because Canberra has more Wallabies it's a misnomer to suggest that it's because the Private Schools develop their Rugger boys better.

In fact it's total garbage. Long-live the Canberra journo:)

what about mentioning the local canberra girls in the Young Matildas and the Matildas? Why does it always have to be about the boys?

Ok you asked the questions:

Here's my defence/answers!

Because this was the comment the guy made and I'm responding to that.

Because my brain is focusing on the boys at the moment..(although my only child is a girl so I'm thinking I should be putting more time into girls sport!)

Because I'm a volunteer and write what I want when I want

Because we need someone to cover girls and women's football in a blog and I would encourage anyone/group to have a go.....

Because you shouldn't leave coverage of female sport to a bloke like me...I can't be trusted.

Because with the Internet there is NO EXCUSE from any sports fan to say that we don't get enough female sports coverage anymore.

Because I do the best I can but it's never good enough.

Apart from that always welcome your comments but I'll never be able to satisfy your interests...I'm just a volunteer and a bloody sick one at that...

To be honest, who cares what those Rugger Buggers think? They're an insular bunch of private school wanks who have a big voice but are a small minority (isn't it always the way!). Your mate can flap his gums all he likes, but when Australia have qualified for Seth Efrika 2010 and are mixing it with the best the world has to offer, and the whole nation is totally engaged.... well, he's welcome to crawl back down his hole and disappear.

Hi Andy

I agree with you on this ... Rugby Union is the 4th biggest of the football codes in Australia in terms of crowds, press coverage, participation etc. See the Sweeney Sports report for confirmation. In Canberra we get the Brumbies shoved down our throats by the press. And Rugby Union is virtually invisible in Melbourne, Adelaide and except for the South African white expat demography, in Perth as well.

I arrived back in Australia late last year after 2 years living and working in Johannesburg. I so delighted in destroying the misconception that rugby union was our major sport. You will also be interested to know that Football aka soccer is the number one sport in South Africa based on people's interest, then cricket, then rugby union. The impression we get here in Australia is that rugby union is the number 1 sport in South Africa. I guess this is because the power, money, press are still in the hands of a small white and Afrikaner population.

Football bigger than Union...ssshh don't say that to loudly around Canberra.

As for South Africa the impression in Oz that the South Africans love their cricket and Union at the expense of everything else.

Well let them see what happens in the World Cup.

The old media types in south Africa and Australia will be beaten down by people power..once more.
